ABOUT GARETH

Gareth Russell is a Northern Irish historian, author, and broadcaster known for his work in historical fiction and non-fiction. Educated at St Peter’s College, Oxford, and Queen’s University, Belfast, he specializes in European and royal history.
His writing career began with the young adult novel Popular (2011) and its sequel The Immaculate Deception (2012), both adapted for the stage in Northern Ireland. He later transitioned to non-fiction, earning acclaim for Young and Damned and Fair (2017), a biography of Catherine Howard, and The Ship of Dreams (2019), an exploration of the Titanic disaster.
Russell’s more recent works include Do Let’s Have Another Drink (2022), a portrait of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and The Palace (2023), a history of Hampton Court Palace, both of which received critical recognition. Queen James, his highly anticipated book about King James I, publishes in 2025.
Russell frequently contributes to BBC Northern Ireland, Al Jazeera, and other media outlets, providing expert commentary on royal events.
He divides his time between Belfast, London, and New York.
